July 4th Party Ideas - Keep Your Pets Safe By Brenda Prevost
As we all look forward to celebrating this July 4th, it is important to remember your pets. There are always stories about what happens to pets on Halloween but not considering what can happen on July 4th could have tragic results. I speak from personal experience on this.
IF YOU ARE HAVING A PARTY
Young pets, especially dogs should be isolated from your guests for the duration of the July 4th party. Why?
Kittens and especially puppies will eat almost anything. If something hazardous to their health (onions or chocolate for example) should be either dropped on the floor or inadvertently given to them as a "treat" by a guest, it could have terrible consequences. Also, young (and mature) pets can be traumatized by all the unusual noise and activity created by a July 4th party. It is best to put them in a quiet room with plenty of food, water, bedding, toys and anything else that comforts them. Check on them frequently to make sure they're OK. After everyone has left and things are cleaned up, let them out and give them extra love and attention.
KEEP YOUR PETS INSIDE
Keep your pets in the house on July 4th. Even if you are not having a July 4th party, don't let your pets roam freely outside that day or especially that night. This comes from personal experience. I grew up in Miami, Florida with two beloved Maltese twin cats. One was lost due to illness but the other lived to be a healthy 17 years old. The morning of July 5th, Barney didn't come home. A neighbor rang our doorbell and there in her hands was a box, inside my beautiful Barney lay dead. She had been intentionally hit by a motorcycle by some bored teenagers out for trouble. Please don't make that mistake with your pets this Fourth of July.
LEAVE YOUR PETS AT HOME
This is another personal experience I had. We were all at a park one year watching a July 4th fireworks display when out of nowhere a terrified dog walked up to me. This poor thing had wandered away from his family and was scared to death by all the noise. Why somebody would bring their dog to a July 4th celebration is beyond me. I did my best to comfort him and eventually the owner and I connected. Happy ending there, but it could haven been worse. Even though Fido always wants be wherever you are, don't bring your pet to see July 4th fireworks or to a July 4th party.
Have fun planning your July 4th party. Use your imagination to come up with great new July 4th party ideas and maybe some neat new family traditions. Just remember to think of your furry family members. They depend on you to keep them happy, healthy and safe. Happy July 4th everyone and Happy Birthday America!

July 3, 2008 Breaking Family Ties That Bind Parental Fears
When we really examine our fears about something, we sometimes notice that the fear we have is not based on our own experience. Often, if we trace our fear back to its source, we find that one of our parents may have handed it down to us. For example, your mother or father may have had an intense fear of lack of money, stemming from their own life experiences. If that fear was not resolved by the time you came into the picture, chances are you inherited it. Meanwhile, you may have no actual experience of lacking money, so being fearful doesn't make sense, and it may even block you from doing certain things you want to do.
Keeping in mind that your parents were only trying to protect you, and that most of the errors in judgment they made were made with the best intentions, it might be time to release this fear symbolically. You cannot resolve someone else's fear for them, but you can decide to let go of it on your own behalf. Whether your parents are still alive or not, it is best to do this in a symbolic way, using visualization and, if you like, ritual. One simple visualization involves inviting your parent to sit across from you in your heart space and sharing your desire to move on from this fear, letting them know that you will not carry it anymore. You may be surprised at the response you get, because it's possible they will be proud of you, grateful, and proud of your courage.
The more we do this deep inner work with our fears, the better we will be able to parent our own children without burdening them with fears that don't belong to them. Some of us will do as much of this work as we can before we become parents, while others will be working on this even as our children become adults. Either way, the effects will be felt, because once we break our ties to the fears of the past, our children's ties to those fears are greatly weakened, so it's important to remember that it's never too late.

Don't Feel Responsible for Everybody's Happiness!
Many women are archetypal rescuers - they feel responsible for the happiness of those in their immediate circle. They just can't bear it when a spouse or a child is disappointed or upset because they see it as their duty to fix the misery. However, there is a considerable difference between playing the role of a rescuer and providing support and compassion. Consider it like this: Instead of giving someone who is hungry a fish to eat, it is better to teach him how to fish. Absorbing our loved one's stress, we lose our positive energy - ultimately we are no good to ourselves or to our family and friends.
Mothers are by nature caregivers and nurturers. Generally, women are trained for this role since childhood when they learn to be accommodating and perfectionists. However, the impulse to rescue stems from its opposite - feeling like a victim and not having enough self-esteem. As a rescuer, a person feels empowered: "You need me." However, by taking care of everyone's needs, you actually cripple that person because he does not develop traits like: independent thinking, courage, or compassion. If a person never feels vulnerable or has to save himself, then how can he become compassionate and forgiving? Disappointments and mistakes lead to an appreciation of happiness and success.
It is important for children and adults to cry when they feel sad or disappointed. Crying releases serotonin - that's why the phrase, "I had a good cry." Everyone needs quiet time to sort things out, so let them. A person with good self-esteem does not live vicariously through a spouse or a child. When a person is secure with her identity, she allows others to discover theirs. Someone who is always giving will inevitably tip over.
When the urge to engage in a rescue mission arises, have a logical debate with yourself about the disservice you are doing and resist the temptation. For example, your teenager has a history paper due in two months. You have been suggesting to your son to do his term paper for weeks; you remind him to go to the library, write notes on index cards and begin organizing the information. He keeps telling you that he has plenty of time and that he knows how to do his work. The weekend before the due date suddenly arrives; the library does not have the necessary books and there is so much information on the internet that he doesn't have the time to put it together. He becomes an agitated prophet of doom He expects your help as a navigator, organizer and ultimately ghost writer/typist. Resist! Do not save him, but let him wrestle with the paper. Come Monday morning he will have to face the consequences. He will learn from his mistakes and do better next time.
This generation of mothers has been building up their children's self-esteem to a fault and now the children feel entitled! When a child loses a soccer game, we buy her a gift to fill her empty heart. We are teaching our children to address their disappointments with material possessions instead of practicing more, asking the coach for guidance and learning how to develop their capabilities. Don't feel coldhearted or selfish because you don't assume everyone's burden and serve as their cheerleader. Learn to be of the self, self-ish, you are good enough!
